Why Public Told Not to Wear Masks when Coronavirus Pandemic Began, and Why Masks are Necessary:

 

Fauci explained that public health experts "were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply." Fauci said they wanted to have as many masks as possible available for front line workers and emergency personnel. "We wanted to make sure that the people, namely the health care workers, who were brave enough to put themselves in harm's way, to take care of people who you know were infected with the coronavirus and the danger of them getting infected," Fauci concluded.

In terms of use by the public, "Masks are [...] certainly are better than not wearing a mask. Both to prevent you, if you happen to be a person who maybe feels well, but has an asymptomatic infection that you don't even know about, to prevent you from infecting someone else," Fauci said. "But also, it can protect you a certain degree, not 100%, in protecting you from getting infected from someone who, either is breathing, or coughing, or sneezing, or singing or whatever it is in which the droplets or the aerosols go out. So masks work," Fauci added.

Highest Single Day of Coronavirus Cases Breaks Record

The U.S. broke its record for the highest coronavirus cases recorded in a single day. Cases topped the previous highest day count from April 26 — the first peak of the pandemic in the U.S., while The World Health Organization saw its single-day record on Sunday with more 183,000 cases worldwide.

Health experts said the recent resurgence in Southern and Western states can be traced back to Memorial Day, when municipalities started loosening lockdowns and reopening businesses.

Coronavirus Infections Surge in the US

21 states are experiencing increases in new cases, according to data compiled by The Washington Post. Alabama, Oregon and South Carolina have seen the largest increases. Alabama had a 92% increase in its seven-day average; Oregon had a 83.8% increase; and South Carolina's seven-day average increased 60.3%.

World Health Organization (WHO) Changes Advice on Face Masks
The World Health Organization (WHO) changed its advice on face masks, saying MASKS SHOULD BE WORN where COVID-19 is widespread.

"In light of evolving evidence, WHO advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission and physical distancing is difficult," WHO’s Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday, June 5th. The WHO had previously advised that only people who were ill, or caring for someone who was ill, should wear masks.

Many retailers, transit systems, and municipalities had previously deemed face masks mandatory in public areas.
